Monday meditation: ‘God, is this really the calling you’ve given me?’

When God spoke to Moses at the burning bush, the Bible says Moses “was afraid to look at God.”

We can relate, can’t we? God’s call can be frightening. When God called us to caregiving, for example, some of us were certain we had heard him wrong.

Moses tried to talk God out of the mission God had for him. And more than once we, too, have wanted to tell God how we knew best.

But again and again in the Bible we see how God had something in mind grander than the vision of the person he called.

Maybe that’s true for us, too. The fact is, we don’t know how our obedience may influence someone watching us. We can’t see the impact of our journey. And our path of struggle may be only the first mile in a greater story whose end we can’t imagine.

And so we take the next step, believing that God is close, trusting that he knows best. God promised Moses, “I will be with you.” We know he has been with us in the past, too. And this week we can look for the signs that he is walking with us every step of the way.

Read: Exodus 3:1-12

Pray: God, sometimes I feel my foothold slipping. Lift me with your strong arms, let me hear your voice, and give me the courage to answer your call.
